6.1.7 Review or Reconsideration of External Assessment Results
- Candidates may apply for a review or reconsideration of results of external assessments except in the case of:
- Cook Island Māori, Indonesian and Korean where schools are responsible through their policies for any review of results. Details of the process are provided to schools during the year.
- Level 1 and 2 Visual Arts standards. Details of the processes are provided to schools during the year.

- Candidates who return external assessment material to NZQA for a review or reconsideration must not have altered or added to the assessment material in any way. Booklets or portfolios which have been changed in any way will not be eligible for review or reconsideration, and will be dealt with under Breaches of the Rules-External Assessment.
- In the unlikely event that external assessment material goes missing and in the absence of evidence to the contrary, reviews and reconsiderations are not available and the existing grade reported grade will stand.
- All candidates will be sent notification of the outcome of the review or reconsideration within one month of receipt by NZQA.
- Reviews
- Candidates may make a request for a review of external assessment material only if they consider a processing error (such as one or more sections unmarked, or the incorrect transfer of grades) has been made.
- NZQA will fix the closing date for review requests provided that at least seven days are allowed to candidates after result notices have been issued and/or external assessment materials returned. In exceptional circumstances, NZQA may accept late applications.
- The review request must be made in writing to NZQA and must specify the nature of the perceived error.
- Candidates may make a request for a review of external assessment material only if they consider a processing error (such as one or more sections unmarked, or the incorrect transfer of grades) has been made.
- Reconsiderations
- Reconsideration of externally assessed standards is available where practicable. Candidates may apply for a reconsideration if they believe that their work has not been assessed correctly and they wish to have it re-marked.
- Applications for reconsideration of external assessment material must be made on the appropriate form and be accompanied by the reconsideration fee.
- NZQA will fix the closing date for reconsideration applications provided that at least seven days are allowed to candidates after result notices have been issued and/or external assessment materials returned. In exceptional circumstances NZQA may accept late applications.
- The reconsideration will include reassessment of the student work using the original assessment schedule(s) and the checking of all processes, that all sections of the paper have been marked and that the grades have been correctly transferred.
- Candidates whose result is improved will be sent a refund of the reconsideration fee.
- Reconsideration of externally assessed standards is available where practicable. Candidates may apply for a reconsideration if they believe that their work has not been assessed correctly and they wish to have it re-marked.
