Optional Teacher-selected evidence

Questions for Optional Teacher-selected Evidence in English

The purpose of the teacher-selected evidence option with external moderation submissions is to provide further professional feedback and two-way dialogue between teachers and moderators about interpreting national standards and making assessment decisions. For this reason, it is important for teachers to clearly articulate their reasons for asking a question.

It is not designed so that:

  • additional student samples can be moderated
  • moderators do the assessment for the teachers
  • resolutions of student appeals can be passed on to someone else.

In the following table, the six questions are regarded as being unsuitable because they do not give the moderator the reason for the original teacher's decision. The 'revised' versions of the questions allow the moderator to see what specific clarification or confirmation the teachers are seeking.

Unsuitable questions Revised/ suitable questions
Is this okay? This has been submitted for 90375. We feel that it is a 'transactional' rather than 'creative writing' piece and, therefore, is not consistent with the purpose of the standard. How strict do we need to be about the distinction between the two standards?
Is this a credit? We do not feel that this piece meets PC1.1. There are ideas, but they do not appear to be sufficiently 'developed' as required for level 2. Do you agree?
This student has appealed the Not Achieved grade we awarded. Are we or the student right? We have reconfirmed this grade as Not Achieved because there is a pattern of tense and syntax errors which we feel are intrusive and therefore do not meet the fourth criterion. Do you agree?
Is this oral presentation at Excellence? We are confident that this student meets the first and second criteria at Excellence. We have concerns about the third criterion: we have identified the following techniques but are these sufficient to meet 'Integrate a range of appropriate presentation techniques'?
Is this writing Achieved? We feel that this piece meets Achieved for the first, third and fourth criteria. We are concerned that there may be insufficient sentence control to meet the second criterion.
Is this all right for 12417? We are confident that the work 'demonstrates production techniques appropriate to form and purpose' (PC1.2), but we are not certain whether it meets the intent of special note 4: "pre-production means that images are actively worked through so that the qualities of a final production are clear".

The questions below are examples where moderators were able to give specific information and/or feedback for the listed standards.

Standard Useful/ suitable questions
90052 The student has attempted complex sentences which do not always work. Is the Not Achieved assessment fair?
12905 This text is a bit easy. Is it okay to have one text a bit easier? The others are, I think, all good curriculum level 7 texts.
90381 This topic is quite difficult and the questions the student set himself are demanding. The research is there, there are judgements ? but they are sometimes a little broad. Have we been too lenient in our assessment?
