Examiner Commentary

The standard criteria focus on the highlighted key words.

The following examples were awarded an holistic Achievement with Merit grade in the 2004 examination. These exemplars reflect this award for the following reasons:

  • There is a relevant image created with draw/paint tools; for example, not just a party balloon but a hot air balloon which relates to a flight business. Text alone was acceptable (as can be seen in one of the samples).
  • The emblem is resized and placed appropriately (proportion/balance).
  • All tasks are an appropriate size.
  • A range of textual and non-textual enhancements is used effectively and design principles are applied. Examples of this are:
    • effective repetition of a clear font style
    • the size and emphasis of important information (contrast)
    • effective use of additional images
    • consideration of the placement (balance) of the photo box (not just placed in the middle of the frame)
    • use of shading (contrast)
    • images that stop the eye from running off the edge of a document (for example the document with the stars)
    • various alignment styles
    • similar information is grouped together appropriately and consideration given to placement (harmony/balance)
    • repetition of an image or graphic to draw the reader's eye
    • words or images are placed to represent movement or flight (the theme)
    • the graphic on the photo frame is placed so the photo becomes part of the frame. For example, people in the photo would appear to be sitting in the space shuttle or hot air balloon (harmony).
