Latin - Change in Examination Paper Format

This circular provides details of the change in format of the 2009 Latin examination papers. For 2009, all questions within each paper will provide opportunity for all grades of performance - Achievement, Achievement with Merit, and Achievement with Excellence. There are no stand-alone questions for lower achievement grades. Candidates should attempt all questions.

The format of the examination papers has changed for Level 1 90115 and 90116, Level 2 90260 and 90261, and Level 3 90508. This circular provides detail about these changes.

Changes for Level 1 90115 and Level 2 90260

The paper format is essentially the same; the passage will appear on the left facing page, and the question on the right.

There will be one question on each paragraph, and each question will require a number of short responses. For example:

Question One

Read paragraph one and answer all THREE parts of this question.

  • Give any THREE pieces of information ...
  • Explain in detail ...
  • Explain why the verb ...

Questions on paragraphs two and three will follow a similar format, but may contain more or fewer parts as appropriate for the paragraph.

Each of the questions will give candidates the opportunity to offer evidence for Achievement, Achievement with Merit, Achievement with Excellence. There will be a single grade given for each of the three questions, based on the evidence given across the short responses for each of the three paragraphs. The schedule will detail likely responses and guiding principles to assign overall levels of performance. For example:

Achieved Achieved with Merit Achieved with Excellence
The candidate shows some understanding of the ideas and language in the passage. One or two parts of a question may be omitted. The answers may lack specific detail. The candidate shows a detailed understanding of the ideas and language in the passage, providing the information required by the questions on several occasions. One part of a question may be omitted. The answers have supporting detail. The candidate shows a comprehensive understanding of the ideas and language in the passage by providing the information required by the question on almost all occasions. All parts of the question will be attempted. The answers have supporting detail. A minor slip or omission will not preclude Excellence.

Changes for Level 1 90116 and Level 2 90261

The paper format is essentially the same; instructions will be given as in the past. Level 2 90261 follows the format of Level 1 90116, with the addition of the translation; the format of the translation remains unchanged from previous years.

Each question will provide guidance for candidates, using prompts. For example:

The Latin passage above describes ...

  • Who is ...?
  • Explain in detail ...
  • Explain in detail how ...

For Level 1 90166, there will be a second question in a similar format for the Latin passage, and the questions on the English passage will be in the same style. Each of the four questions (two on each of the Latin and English passages) will give candidates the opportunity to offer evidence for Achievement, Achievement with Merit, Achievement with Excellence. The schedule will detail the likely responses and guiding principles to assign grades to actual candidate responses. For example:

Achieved Achieved with Merit Achieved with Excellence
The candidate shows some understanding of the passage in its immediate context by providing some information. One part of a question may be omitted. The answers may lack specific detail. The candidate shows a detailed understanding of the passage in its immediate context by providing detailed information on several occasions. The candidate shows a comprehensive understanding of the passage in its wider context by providing detailed information on almost all occasions. All answers are covered at an appropriate level of depth.

Changes for Level 3 90508

The paper format is essentially the same; the passage will appear on the left facing page, and the question on the right.

Candidates must choose one of two passages for both translation and comment. After translating a section of the passage, candidates must answer two out of four question options for analysis. Each of the four questions will give candidates the opportunity to offer evidence for Achievement, Achievement with Merit, or Achievement with Excellence through the different aspects for analysis outlined in the Standard.

Each question will provide guidance for candidates, using prompts. For example:

  • Who is ...?
  • Explain in detail ...
  • Explain in detail how ...
