Format of the 2009 Assessment in Scholarship Music

This circular is reiterating the procedure for submission of a portfolio for assessment in Scholarship Music in 2009.

Each candidate will submit one portfolio, either as a performer, composer or musicologist.

The portfolio requirements are outlined in the Assessment Specifications. The Assessment Specifications are available opposite.

All written material (critical reflective studies and discussions) must be completed on A4 sized paper. Portfolios must not exceed this size.

Attached to the Assessment Specifications is an Authenticity Form. This form will need to be completed by each candidate. Each candidate must hand their completed copy of the form, with their portfolio, to the examination supervisor at the time of the examination: 2.00 pm Monday 23 November. The Authenticity Form is included in the Assessment Specifications.

Candidates presenting a portfolio as a performer or a composer must submit a recording of one substantial piece of their work and other recordings of 1 minute each as part of the portfolio. Care must be taken to ensure that any audio or audio visual material submitted as part of the candidate's portfolio is packaged securely and clearly labelled with the words "Scholarship Music 2009", the candidate's NSN (National Student Number) and Exam Centre Code. This is to be noted on the actual CD, Audio Tape and DVD as well as its case. Eg:

Acceptable Formats for Visual and Audio Submissions

Teachers and Principals' Nominees are asked to bear the following considerations in mind when students are preparing their preparing visual and audio submissions for Scholarship

CD-R or DVD-R format or standard VHS videotape (standard play not long play) should be used.

Do not send Blue ray discs, Hi8, DV or Mini DV tapes, or HD files.

Other technology such as USB flash drives, You Tube , etc. are not suitable due to high security and virus transmission risks. 

CD / DVD File Format Type

The following file format types are acceptable:

  • Portable Document Format (.pdf)
  • JPEG Image Format (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe .)
  • Graphics Interchange Format (.gif)
  • Standard formats as used in Windows Media Player
  • PowerPoint
  • QuickTime

Other graphics formats may not be able to be read.

Audio

  • .AIFF or .WAV file format at 44.1 kHz sampling rate
  • a submission on an audio cassette tape is also acceptable

The other two sections will be completed during the examination on Monday 23 November

The two sections in the examination are:

  1. Individual score extracts.
  2. Comparison of two or more unprepared score extracts.
  • Each of these sections contains four questions. Candidates are required to answer only one question from each section, therefore responding to two of the eight questions in total.

  • Questions will require a conventional essay format response and it is recommended that candidates be encouraged to qualify their responses and analytical decisions to add depth and breadth to the quality of their answers.

  • For candidate reference there will be 12 unprepared score extracts presented in a separate resource booklet. Each section of the examination paper requires candidates to choose scores from this resource.
  • Candidates may select and refer to any given score extract once only.
