Phone Results a Success

Telephone access to examination results is likely to be extended next year following the successful trial with 1999 University Bursaries results.

For the first time, Bursaries results were available on an 0900 number a few days prior to their delivery by NZ Post. Candidates received a personal identification number (PIN) in December and were able to dial for results from 10 January 2000.

Results were in most letterboxes by 15 January 2000. Calls cost 99 cents per minute and even lengthy sets of results took less than 3 minutes. About 60% of the 27 000 Bursaries candidates used the 0900 service.

Despite a few media suggestions to the contrary, the Qualifications Authority made no profit from the user-pays service. Learner Information Manager, Linda Forsyth, explains that set-up costs mean the Authority would barely break even on the trial. "To be sure of confidentiality, we mailed each candidate's PIN directly to their home address. We will have to do this every year. With internal costs added, even if every candidate called the 0900 number there would be no profit."

Linda Forsyth says the Authority is looking at providing this year's School Certificate results by telephone. "There were very few hitches and lots of praise for the service. So as we send this year's electronic file of results to the printer for result notices, we'll also put the results on the 0900 number."

From a satisfied customer:

I would like to commend the NZQA on providing the 1999 Bursary Results by phone. I found this method to my liking as it meant that I didn't have to wait until the little brown envelope appeared in my mailbox. It was easy to use and took little time so I have my results in record time.

I recommend that the NZQA continues to use this phone line for future bursary results, as I'm sure the candidates will appreciate it as much as I have. I can now go out and celebrate my A bursary.
