Testing Times in East Timor

Army personnel on peacekeeping duties in East Timor had a special assignment in November last year: they were able to sit their examinations for motor industry qualifications. The Qualifications Authority collaborated with the Motor Industry Training Organisation (MITO) and the New Zealand Army to set up an overseas examination centre for seven Army personnel who were due to sit papers.

The Qualifications Authority arranges overseas examination centres for schools, trades and vocational examinations where New Zealanders studying with a New Zealand provider are residing overseas. In 1999 there were 45 overseas centres in such places as Tanzania, India, Indonesia, Dubai, England, China, Japan, Singapore, Pakistan, Brunei, Fiji, USA, France and even Australia.

University Bursaries Music moderators Trevor Thwaites and Rose Campbell assess a videotaped performance. Every November Music specialists from round the country gather in Wellington to view and assess benchmark samples of student work from each school. Schools place Music candidates in order around the benchmark results and award marks.
