NZQA's Role

The role of the Qualifications Authority is closely linked to the Government's objectives for national economic, social and cultural development. The Authority provides qualifications, quality assurance, assessment and examination services in New Zealand and overseas.

The Authority was established as a crown entity in 1990 to put in place and manage a structured, flexible approach to qualifications development that would recognise a diverse range of achievement.

A qualifications body which provides quality assurance and is responsive to the demands of a knowledge economy is vital to New Zealand's future prosperity. The Qualifications Authority can make a valuable strategic contribution to New Zealand's education and innovation strategy.

The aim is to support national and regional business and social goals by building on what has already been achieved and to achieve this in partnership with employers, unions, education providers and other key national stakeholders.

The Authority intends to lead the way in the development of quality assurance best practice as it applies to qualifications, standards and providers. It recognises the need to provide this quality assurance as part of a seamless, integrated service ensuring that education and training is fit for purpose, in whatever context it occurs. It also recognises that international benchmarking has become very important.
