New beginnings in Botswana

Moving to Botswana is not your everyday career move. But for Peter Fleming the challenge of implementing a national qualifications system in the southern African nation was too good an opportunity to pass up.

Peter Fleming
Peter has been with NZQA since 1995, quality assuring qualifications and components of qualifications and monitoring industry training organisations' moderation systems. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the area of national qualifications and many involved in the qualifications industry will have had dealings with him.

Peter's new job is with the relatively new Botswana Training Authority (BOTA) where he will be responsible for getting a quality assured National Qualifications Framework, similar to New Zealand's, operational over the next three years.

"Training providers in Botswana are of varying quality," says Peter.

BOTA is keen to implement a national assessment and quality assurance programme to improve vocational opportunities for its people, and there are already many contractors from New Zealand, some also formerly with NZQA, working with the Authority to get the programme off the ground.

"It will give the people of Botswana vocational opportunities that they haven't had up until now because of a lack of nationally recognised qualifications," Peter says.

Peter is looking forward to the challenges of his new job and new home. He starts with an eight-day driving tour of Botswana, which will help him get to know the country and prepare for the travelling to come. "Botswana has a good electronic infrastructure in terms of computers and email, but physical, face-to-face communication will require a lot of driving as the providers are very spread out," he said.

We wish Peter the best of luck with his travels.
