NZQA creates Māori Reference Group |
|
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has created a new Māori Reference Group (MRG) of external advisers to help it develop a Māori strategy. To do this, the MRG will carry out consultation with Māori in the development of the strategy. From the information compiled, NZQA will then draft a Māori strategy, which will be incorporated into NZQA's strategic plan. The Māori strategy will help set specific targets for NZQA to provide qualifications that will support Māori in meeting their educational needs and aspirations. The members of the MRG were appointed by NZQA's Board and have been selected from throughout the Māori education sector. The members are Colin Rangi (chair), Professor Mason Durie, Tamati Cairns, Nori Parata, Wiremu Doherty, James Hamiora, Turoa Royal, Professor Tania Ka'ai and a yet to be confirmed representative of Te Puni Kokiri. NZQA's Acting Board Chair, Catherine Gibson, supports the creation of the MRG. "It is projected that in 50 years' time, Māori, along with Pasifika students, will make up almost half of the tertiary students in New Zealand. "The Board recognises the importance of Māori realising their potential as contributors to the future economic and social well-being of New Zealand," she said. The Māori strategy is expected to be in operation by late 2006 and will guide NZQA in setting many of its strategic objectives and business plans.
