Pasifika cultures reflected in new standards

A wide range of Pasifika cultures are clearly reflected in a series of new Early Childhood education standards.

NZQA National Qualifications Services has completed the development of new Early Childhood unit standards in the following domains: Cook Islands: Te Punanga Reo Kuki Airani; Fiji: Na I Taukei Mai Viti; Niue: Kautaha Aoga Niue; Samoa: A'Oga Amata; Tokelau: Ofaga o te Gagana Tokelau; Tonga: Akoteu.

Qualifications Development Facilitator Gretchen Ivess says these were developed after stakeholders asked for standards that reflected the philosophy, protocols, and culture of each Pacific Island group. A panel with representatives of each island group worked alongside NZQA to develop them.

The new standards also embrace the philosophy of Te Whariki/ Early Childhood curriculum and promote the holistic development of Pasifika children attending early childhood education services. In order to achieve the standards, candidates are assessed on their planning, facilitation and review of early childhood programmes that promote Pasifika languages, traditional beliefs, values, protocols and the cultures of the different island groups.

"As a result, candidates undertaking a course of study in Pasifika early childhood education can now be assessed against a wider range of level 5 and 6 standards which reflect their own culture and the principles of Te Whariki," Gretchen says.

Providers wishing to include these standards in their programmes may require an extension of accreditation. Specific accreditation requirements are included in AMAP 0157. Please email provider@nzqa.govt.nz or phone (04) 463-3286.
