Secondary School statistics redesigned

From this month, secondary schools will be able to see NCEA statistics online in a new, clearer format.

The simplified design enables running comparison reports in a single screen, rather than multiple screens. Schools will be able to compare with others in the same geographical region for the first time, and will be able to apply filters to derive new and greater levels of detail. For example, it will be possible to perform breakdowns by gender and ethnicity simultaneously.

The basis on which secondary school statistics are calculated has also changed.

"NCEA statistics will now more fairly represent schools' performance. Only those students entered in standards with sufficient credits to achieve a qualification in that year will be counted," says Deputy Chief Executive, Qualifications, Bali Haque.

Statistics were released to schools in the familiar format on 23 January, which enabled them to quality check the data.

"The new website design differs significantly from the old one and there have been many changes to provide more accurate results and make it easier to use," Bali says.

Schools were provided with a user guide via the website, and more information has been provided at the Principal's Nominee February-March road shows. The new-format statistics will be available to the public in April.

The filter has been set by the school (name hidden) so that it can compare NCEA achievement rates for its Maori male students with national NCEA achievement rates for Maori male students. The results are to be broken down by decile.
