E aku hoa, e aku whakaruruhau kei te mihi. "Kahui has been part of the moderation process since NCEA began," says Johnny Waititi, National Assessment Facilitator. "Tikanga Maori underpins all processes and systems of Kahui which includes a collaborative approach. "Moderators are given on-site support and feedback by the National Moderator and National Assessment Facilitator for Te Reo Maori and Te Reo Rangatira." Moderation for internally assessed standards for Te Reo Maori and Te Reo Rangatira and Tikanga a Iwi is carried out by 14 moderators who meet (Kahui) six times a year. Moderation reports completed during Kahui ensure nationwide consistency in the assessment of internal standards in Te Reo Maori, Te Reo Rangatira and Tikanga a Iwi. At the March meeting, moderators produced 154 reports for 54 secondary schools over three days.
"The agreement rates between moderators and assessors/ teachers is high. Moderation reports give valuable feedback to schools, highlighting areas where there is high level of achievement and also areas where teachers may need support," Johnny says. Te Reo Rangatira is a course offered by Wharekura and Kura Kaupapa Maori where submissions are done entirely in Te Reo Rangatira. Submissions received so far in Te Reo Maori, Te Reo Rangatira and Tikanga a Iwi have been of a high standard.

The Kahui are also a forum for discussion, for example, for sharing updates to NCEA. Relevant information can be shared with the members, for example, School Relationship Manager, Harata Day, attended the May Kahui.
