Ten Years On - The Work of The Qualifications Authority

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority.

In this issue of QA News we look back on the significance of what has been achieved, talk to some of those involved in developments and look at a few of the challenges ahead.

The articles that follow powerfully demonstrate just how far the work of the Qualifications Authority has brought us over the past decade. They chart impressive progress in a number of important areas - the development of nationally-recognised standards and qualifications, workplace learning, Māori education and training, national examinations and the development of new quality systems and processes throughout the education system.

The world too has moved on. An article describing the transformation of the Authority's own systems from paper-based to highly-automated captures the rapid pace of technological change that impacts on us all. The information age has arrived and today's citizens must be equipped to participate in a society where skills, knowledge and qualifications are at a premium.

The stories here show how the Authority has contributed to New Zealand's education and training infrastructure so that it caters for a wider variety of learning needs than ever before and does so with enhanced quality, coherence and collaboration.

The Qualifications Authority would like to thank the many organisations and people who have contributed their time and insights to this process of development. The commentators interviewed for this edition make it clear that this process hasn't always been easy.

In many areas of development, groups and stakeholders were coming together for the first time and progress was only possible through intense debate and discussion over a number of years. What has been achieved to date is a tribute to the strength of the partnerships that have developed as a result.

The Authority looks forward to building on these partnerships in the years ahead.
