2 Definition of Terms
The following meanings apply, unless otherwise stated in the text.
| Term | Definition |

| Academic year | period of 12 months commencing on the first day of January |
| Assessment | collecting and evaluating evidence to establish the level of a candidate's performance |
| NZQA | The New Zealand Qualifications Authority established under section 248 of the Education Act 1989 |
| The Board | the members comprising the board of NZQA, as appointed under section 28 of the Crown Entities Act 2004 |
| The Chief Executive | the Chief Executive of NZQA |
| TEO Chief Executive Officer | the Chief Executive Officer, or equivalent, of a TEO |
| NZDipBus | New Zealand Diploma in Business |
| NZDipBus Liaison | a member of the staff of a TEO who carries out duties and responsibilities for NZQA in accordance with these rules and procedures |
| NZQA Officers | employees of NZQA |
| Prescription | a statement that sets out the particular knowledge and skills outcomes required from the study of a specific subject at a specific level |
| Quality Assurance Body | NZQA, and any body that, under section 260 of the Education Act 1989, has authority to exercise the powers of course approval and accreditation to provide approved courses (currently for universities this is the Committee on University Academic Programmes (CUAP) of the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors' Committee (NZVCC), and for polytechnics (including institutes of technology) this is the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics Quality (ITP Quality) of the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand (ITPNZ)). |
